Indie games digest #2 – Zen town-building, a snappy platformer, and more!

The best from new and upcoming indie games.

Explore new releases, announcements, showoffs, and upcoming indie game titles this week.

Townscaper – Zen town-building game/toy

Townscaper is more of a zen-like painting program disguised as a city builder, than an actual game. While playing this piece of art you can feel a little bit like an architect version of bob ross, smoothly brushing buildings on top of the splashing water.

The game is created by one of the Bad North developers – Oskar Stålberg

It has a beautiful art style and animation. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper’s underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges, and lush backyards, depending on their configuration.

That’s it. No goals. No challenges. No quests. Just you and some buildings. But don’t let that fool you, it can be a very pleasant experience.

Townscraper is out in early access on steam now and it already has overwhelmingly positive reviews!

The Wandering Village – base building on the shoulder of giants

Developed by a small Swiss game studio – Stray Fawn Studio, previously known for Niche and Nimbatus

A base-building survival game where you have to build a settlement on the back of a huge creature and try to survive in a world where the ground has become toxic.

This game is very early in development, but you can follow along if you like the idea. Or you can even join in their discord and suggest your gameplay vision for the game.

The game has no release date yet. The developers are planning to run a Kickstarter this autumn/winter.
